- Morning flight to Mekelle, the capital of Tigray. Explore the city’s key sites such as the Martyrs Memorial Museum, local markets, and taste traditional Tigrayan cuisine. Overnight in Mekelle.
Depart Mekelle early morning by 4x4, passing through scenic highlands to reach Hamed Ela in the Danakil Depression. Observe salt mining and camel caravans. Overnight camping at Hamed Ela.
Visit the colorful and otherworldly Dallol sulfur springs and salt flats. In the afternoon, drive to the base of Erta Ale volcano. Evening trek (3 hrs) to see the lava lake. Overnight camping near the crater.
Early morning descend from the volcano, then drive back to Mekelle for rest. Overnight in Mekelle.
Visit Hawzen, a traditional Tigrayan town with historic churches. Explore rock-hewn churches in the Gheralta Mountains, including famous sites like Abuna Yemata Guh. Overnight in the Gheralta area or nearby town.
Morning visit to additional rock churches such as Debre Maryam Korkor or Wukro Cherkos. After lunch, drive to Axum, the ancient capital city. Overnight in Axum.
Explore Axum’s archaeological treasures: the Obelisks (Stelae Fields), Queen of Sheba’s Palace ruins, Tombs of Kings, and St. Mary of Zion Church. Overnight in Axum.
Fly back to Addis Ababa. Optional city tour or shopping before departure. End of tour.
